  • NASA achieves “Farthest Distance Software Update” record.
  • Update conducted on Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft.
  • Craft located billions of miles away in interstellar space.
  • Overcame outdated technology and minimal memory capacity.
  • Demonstrates NASA’s engineering prowess and commitment to space exploration.

This extraordinary feat was accomplished through the successful updating of software on the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft, which continue their journey billions of miles away from Earth. Since their launch in 1977, these iconic probes have ventured into uncharted territories of interstellar space, facing unique challenges along the way. One of the most daunting tasks has been maintaining the functionality of their onboard computers, which operate on outdated technology from the 1970s and possess a mere 70 kilobytes of memory. Despite these limitations, NASA engineers have demonstrated unparalleled ingenuity and resourcefulness by devising methods to send software updates across vast cosmic distances. Using Assembly Language and pseudo-code, they have overcome programming constraints.  These updates serve as vital lifelines for the spacecraft, addressing malfunctions and ensuring their continued operation in the harsh environment of space.
