WORLD RECORD
Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa ran the 400 metres in 43.03 seconds the fastest time ever recorded by a male athlete, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 14, 2016. The previous record, which Michael Johnson broke, had been in place since 1999. With the new world record set in the final, Wayde earned the event’s gold medal.
